After their marriage Katharina moved in with James, his sister Mary and his parents John and Margaret Cochrane on Lot 8 NBR Hay Twp Huron County. This is where she would remain until her death.

On the 26th of December 1871, the day after Christmas their first child, a daughter Margaret was born. Shortly after the birth of their first child James's mother Margaret had a stroke and was paralyzed, Kathaina would then become her care giver. About 2 years later on 23 October 1873, their second daughter Mary was born, she would become my grandmother.
James and Katharina's first son, John, was born 10 May 1876.  years later on 16 June 1878 another son William was born and on 26 April 1880 a third son Robert was born.
By the time of the Census on 4 April 1881, James was head of the household age 44. Living with his wife Katharina, daughters Margaret and Mary, his 3 sons, John, William and Robert, his parents John and Margaret, his sister Mary and a niece Martha Hood, who was his sister Margaret's daughter.
In August 1881 James sailed to Scotland on a horse buying trip and left Katharina to care for his aging father, his bed ridden mother and 5 small children. After returning from his buying trip the family grew with a daughter Janet born 27 August 1882. On 16 September 1883 Katharina's mother in law passed away after 11 years of being bedridden.. Telephones and electricity were coming to the area and on 23 August 1884 a fourth daughter Jean was born. Next came Catharine a fifth daughter on 28 June 1886. On 6 May 1888 Katharina's mother Margaretha Hieronymus passed away at the age of 64 due to consumption of the lungs. 13 days later on 19th May 1888 a sixth daughter Agnes was born. Just over 2 years later on 27 July 1890 a seventh daughter Elizabeth was born and finally the last and 11th child Anne was born 11 October 1892.
Katharina and James has a busy but fulfilling life on the farm. They were able to sent their eldest daughter Margaret to Art school in New York which would have been a rare happening for the eldest daughter of a family of 11 to be able to do this.

In 1910 James and Katharina took the train to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to visit their daughter Mary Forrest and her family.

Their daughter Mary lost her husband in 1914 and every winter she travelled to her parents home for the winter, From 1914-1921 she took the train east but in 1921 she purchased a car and her son, who was 12 at the time drove them to Ontario every fall until Katharina's passing in 1930,

I  inherited a quilt made by Katharina and her daughters which I treasure

Katharina lost her husband in 1920 and continued to live on the farm .
