I found the marriage of Joseph Arkley to Dorothy Stafford in Ryton, Durham, England records so looked for a birth for Joseph Arkley in the area and so far the only one I've found is Joseph Arkley christened 2 April 1786 son of George and Jane Arkley in the Anglican Church in Bywell, Northumberland. Bywell is about 7 miles from Ryton so it's very likely this is our Joseph. However I may prove later on he's not ours!
